BODY PIERCINGS: A TRENDING FASHION OF TODAY By Janet Omoyajowo Being relevant in this part of the world has a lot to do with your creativity and consistency. Looking at the fashion of today one can conclusively say that styles cherished and adored at the time of our forefathers are gradually taking over the fashion world. A good example is the Afro hairstyles adopted by females and some males today, the Boot-cut trousers (Burna Boy's kind of outfits), crop tops used by Afro babes in the past, jerry curl hairstyle, wearing of waist beads, heels under men’s shoes, leg chains/anklets and the use of numerous finger rings to mention few. It can be established that even though the world is evolving and new things are being introduced per second and our fashion senses are getting sophisticated as well, still those retro-fashion find their conduct into the trends of what we still use. Coming from the angle of piercing of various body parts, it has been in existence for centuri...

By Helen Akindele The ZaZoo Zeh crooner Habeeb Okikiola commonly known as Portable has found his way into stardom and into the music industry in Nigeria, from his unique voice with a sprinkle of fuji sound and intriguing dance steps to his mode of appearance and his street accepted slang. To some, Portable is the definition of grass to grace. His story is simply that of hope for the streets as he doesn’t seem to have a solid background in music but his style is widely accepted making him the new kid on the block. The song ZaZoo Zeh has surprisingly risen the charts with everyone vibing to the new sound from portable, all thanks to his protege Pocolee another high profile dancer in Nigeria and Olamide who was also featured on the track. His style of sagging pants almost to the knees which seems to have been almost forgotten by the male gender is now up on trends. His heavily tattooed body blond tinted hair heavy chain and rings set him aside. His style has been embraced by...

MY TWO CENTS: THE DANFO EXPERIENCE by Blessing Edet We must admit, past Lagos State Government administrations have to be commended for the BRT buses but commercial buses, popularly known as " danfo" especially the old, yellow coloured ones that have lived over 100 years plus are still effective and very efficient in conveying passengers to various destinations in the state. These buses are in different forms, shapes, model and sizes at times one can associate these buses to their drivers. These days I seem to take the bus even more than private cars and cabs, either from school, church. Either it is a visit to a friend's or an outing, we can not deny taking one trip or the other with these buses. In a commercial bus we meet different people from different background, occupation, religion, culture and beliefs. I cannot mention different age groups, children, youths, teenagers, adults and the elderly ones. Although, I can not mention ...

INDECENT DRESSING ON CAMPUSES: TO END OR NOT TO END? by Ibrahim Bankole A sunny Wednesday afternoon at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Lagos, chilling with my friends on the stone chairs, a bevy of ladies in skimpy skirts and tight-fitting tops walked across to occupy another set of seats not too far from us Seated among the ladies was young one whose dressing made it difficult for we guys to pay attention to our conversation. Then an age-old debate sprung up; is indecent dressing is the cause of sexual harassment on campuses? There are no empirical facts to support or oppose that, as reports also show that some randy lecturers in higher institutions often prefer to go for well-dressed, vulnerable female students. Yet, the crisis – though often seen as a female problem – of indecent dressing is not something Nigerian tertiary institutions are taking lying down. Male students have also been guilty by their sloppy, indecorous dress and grooming. It is against this backdrop that...

I STARTED MY SCHOOL BUSINESS WHEN I WAS 18 – Christiana Okomayin NIJ VOICE'S AYOBAMI OLADUNNI sat down with the HND2 Student to talk about entrepreneurship and studies, and the journey so far Briefly tell us about Dunamisfield Montessori School and what makes it stand out for kids within the area it's situated. DMS is a Montessori inclined school that was founded by me. It is different from every other school located in Maryland because we do an intensive one-on-one teaching for students at a very tender age. For example, we have children of 3 years old who can read and children of one year old that can write at least their alphabetical letters (A, B, C, Ds) and numerical figures (1,2,3s). So, these are the reasons why our school is different from every other school out there. At what age did you start actualising your passion for the business? And was there any incident or experience that informed your passion? Okay. At first, there was not any passion for it. But...

By Chioma Ezeotu and Bamidele Olamide The Lagos State Ministry of Environment through its department of drainage has started the reconstruction of the drainage in the Ogba Area to assure them a flood-free raining season henceforth. The drainage which is now being expanded on the side of the Area G Police Station and The Nigerian Institute of Journalism has been a source of worry to business operators and residents of the area. Before the ongoing reconstruction, the dilapidated state of the drainage has made it a home for stagnant, filthy and dirty water filled with different kinds of waste as the clogged drainage has made it impossible for deposited waste to go. According to information from the Engineer in charge of the project, Mr Ayomide Adebiyi, the drainage is a closed one which will link to a bigger cross-culvert at Mokolu Area. Business operators decry effect on sales As a result of the reconstruction, business operators whose daily transactions have been affected complain about...

By Abosede Hannah Nigerian Institute of Journalism’s Pen Radio celebrates its first anniversary, despite facing all odds. Speaking during the anniversary held at the school campus earlier in the week, Programme Director and Lecturer, Olufemi Osuntoki recount how the establishment faced lots of criticism before launching out. Still an online radio, Osuntoki said, “Success starts from scratch. The print department was the first arrangement we made when we come together.” Emphasising the reason for establishing the radio station, Osuntoki stated that practical teachings are needed in a school of communication like NIJ, not just teaching theories alone. According to Osuntoki, alongside his colleague, Christy Okoh said they had limited time to prepare for the launch. “We looked at each other and said we need to do this thing - solve this problem. How much do you have? We just need to put what we have together and we did by the grace of God,” “And after two week...

By Beniah Miracle Frontage of the Wakilin Hassan Adamu Library in the Nigerian Institute of Journalism. This didn’t come as shock to the students as it was already a public fact that students of the institutes no longer use the Library. Students who felt it appropriate to express their opinion on this matter responded to this reporter’s question of why they don’t use the library. Olabode Oluwakemisola, HND 2 Broadcast student revealed that she loves group reading and she is unable to do that in the library due to strict rules that govern library usage. “I used to use the Library when I was in HND1 to make research especially when I have assignments or when I wa...
