BODY PIERCINGS: A TRENDING FASHION OF TODAY By Janet Omoyajowo
Being relevant in this part of the world has a lot to do with your creativity and consistency. Looking at the fashion of today one can conclusively say that styles cherished and adored at the time of our forefathers are gradually taking over the fashion world.
A good example is the Afro hairstyles adopted by females and some males today, the Boot-cut trousers (Burna Boy's kind of outfits), crop tops used by Afro babes in the past, jerry curl hairstyle, wearing of waist beads, heels under men’s shoes, leg chains/anklets and the use of numerous finger rings to mention few. It can be established that even though the world is evolving and new things are being introduced per second and our fashion senses are getting sophisticated as well, still those retro-fashion find their conduct into the trends of what we still use.
Coming from the angle of piercing of various body parts, it has been in existence for centuries and the practice has not ceased among the youngsters among use that treasures being in vogue or updated in fashion. Currently, people get piercings for various reasons such as aesthetic appeal, self expression and sexual pleasure, but in various African civilizations, piercings had many cultural meanings apart from being a form of body modification.
Why do we pierce?
Well, the reasons for piercing vary greatly. Some people do so for religious or spiritual reasons, while others do so for self-expression, aesthetic value, and sexual pleasure, to conform with one’s culture or to rebel against it.
Information gathered from West African tradition, explains that nose piercing in men is seen as a sign of wealth, person of substance in the society and the action is placed on high esteem in their society, So men as at the time pierces their nose because of cultural indication of prosperity.
Speaking with some students at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism about their motivation towards having several piercing on their body, it was gathered that each individual has one or two uniqueness in their opinions before making decision.
The Vice President of the Students' Representative Council, Odinmfe Favour showcases her piercings in public with so much confidence and poise, so in her opinion piercing adds to her beauty and makes her feel confident about herself. She added that her motivation towards getting the piercings is that she likes ''the pain piercing comes with.”
Phillip Elias Phillip, a Higher National Diploma II (HND2) student, revealed to us that he got his nose piercing for him to forget about the troubles of life because anytime he looks at his nose piercing he finds solace in it. He continued by referring to individuals that got their bodies tattooed for the purpose of expressing their individuality or to overcome traumatic cases which makes life easier for them to live.
Also, Mariam Agbortian stated that she has always wished to get herself a piercing especially nose piercing because it caught her fancy from other ladies she has seen. From her perspective, the nose piercing beautifies her and boosts her confidence.
With the above interviews, it has been gathered that each person has one uniqueness or more when it comes to their motivations behind piercing any part of their bodies.
For every individual, pain is relative and it depends on the sensitivity of your skin. The skin tissue is sensitive and it can be checked by pinching the different areas you need to pierce. This is why most people have mixed reactions on body piercing pains.
Generally, the individual will experience pain (either their eyes will be watery or it feels like a small pinch), but the pain increases while putting the jewelry on the freshly pierced body part but will definitely get used to it as time passes.
Piercings today can be frowned at or regarded by some as being “unprofessional”, and some workplaces and spheres will not accept it. However, this view is changing slowly as more people get pierced, making the practice an acceptable art and accessory in the current fashion world.
