Music Lens: Portable, Fluke or Wonder?
By Helen Akindele
The ZaZoo Zeh crooner Habeeb Okikiola commonly known as Portable has found his way into stardom and into the music industry in Nigeria, from his unique voice with a sprinkle of fuji sound and intriguing dance steps to his mode of appearance and his street accepted slang.
To some, Portable is the definition of grass to grace. His story is simply that of hope for the streets as he doesn’t seem to have a solid background in music but his style is widely accepted making him the new kid on the block.
The song ZaZoo Zeh has surprisingly risen the charts with everyone vibing to the new sound from portable, all thanks to his protege Pocolee another high profile dancer in Nigeria and Olamide who was also featured on the track.
His style of sagging pants almost to the knees which seems to have been almost forgotten by the male gender is now up on trends. His heavily tattooed body blond tinted hair heavy chain and rings set him aside. His style has been embraced by so many as he has been featured in major concerts in both Lagos and Ibadan joining be leagues like Zlatan, Naira Marley who are prominent in the art of street anthem sounds. His followers has risen drastically on social media and his announcement to hitting the United Kingdom to see his fans across the world on means he is widely accepted
A lot of people still think his style is strange and might not stand the test of time. His heavily tattooed body also seems to be unappealing to the young ones in our society, while others complain about his inability to make sense of his lyrics and attitude. His careless use of vague words steady outburst on the internet and his way of interaction has discouraged others from finding him an emulative celebrity.
Some critics think Even though he sounds quite entertaining he needs to work on his appearance and total rebranding.
Undoubtedly, he is the new rave of Afrobeats, as he makes more giant stride in his stardom, he is an amazing dance with leg work that delights his swelling audience. The ‘Were Olorin’(insane singer) as he usually calls himself has found his place in the music industry and we await more tunes.
But to many, it remains - will Portable be a wonder or will he be a fluke? Only time will tell.
