#ENDSARS: We won't participate Peace-Walk - NIJ students
By Mariam Yaya and Oluwakemi Olabode
Students of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), Lagos will not participate in the Peace Walk on Saturday to be led by the State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The President of the Council, NIJ, Adedapo Adesanya stated the position of students of the institution following the decision of their counterparts in the Lagos State University (LASU) to participate in the Walk.
The Peace Walk organised by the state government is meant to pacify frail nerves over police brutality and killings.
On Thursday, the President of the Student Union Government, LASU, Oladipupo Uthman Badmus had expressed their readiness to participate in the Walk of Peace proposed by the governor.
"We will be by your side. Whenever you run, we will run with you to the end, ” Badmus stated when Sanwo-Olu inaugurated a new Students’ Arcade at the school premises and was welcomed by the SUG President and Speaker of the Students Union Representatives.
Adesanya however said in an interview that participating in the Peace Walk is "selfish thing because the peace walk will not bring about any change"
"If we carry out a survey on the number of LASU students who want to participate in this walk, we will find out that the majority are not interested in the peace walk, rather only a few are.
"All I can say is that those championing this course of action are a set of people choosing to use the body for their personal growth. We know positions like that of the head of a student government when utilised properly can benefit, but once you put that above others, then there is a fundamental problem.
Before participating in a peace walk proposed by the governor, Adesaya said there is need for any interested person to ask him or herself the following questions: What happens to justice?; Has anyone been held accountable for the Lekki massacre?; What is the governor's stand on the panel result?; Is this not another means for campaigning for the next election.
"The only time there would be a walk for peace is when the victims of the #EndSARS massacre get justice," Chidiebere, an HND 1 student of the school said.
The Walk of Peace according to the governor will “herald the healing of the land,” following the release of the report of the #ENDSARS panel and white paper by the government.
