As part of efforts to boost student participation in sports activities, the Students Representative Council (SRC) of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) on Wednesday, December 8 held the first ever NIJ Sports Hangout.

The event which was held at the main field of the school featured varieties of sports and games from football to chess to card games even traditional games were not left behind.

Staylites Defeat Freshers 3-0

One. Two. Three was the count on the score board as Staylites team made up of Higher National Diploma II and National Diploma II students beat the Freshers team made up of Higher National Diploma I and National Diploma I students.

After a goalless and dull first half, the game picked up towards the climax when HND II player, Ubani Raymond with a swift play with his coursemates, Adedapo Adesanya pulled the first goal into the back of the net.

This weakened the Freshers who out of frustration almost got into a broil but it was quickly settled by the officiating referee.

It soon turned bad when Chukwuebuka Adizue using a solo effort rounded past the Freshers defence to slot home the second.

It then turned worse when Destiny, a ND 2 player hammered home the third to send the spectators into a frenzy.

Chess and Checkers

Chess was also a feature at the Sport Hangout as more intellectually stimulating students opted to play by the quiet corner by the school hall.

Commenting on the activity, Emmanuel Asherigomwa said, "It is such a delight. I have defeated all of them!"

Other activities including card games like WHOT, snookers, and aerobics were on display.

Speaking on the organisation, the Head of Sporting Activities for the SRC, Phillip Elias Phillip said the event was a success and that it was important to boost other aspects of student life.

"It is a good thing what we have done here, we cannot always study. School has to be fun and one of the ways we are doing that is through sports.

"People have played, chill, and are so happy. It is a thing of joy."
