This year's sports day at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) students' week tagged 'Exhale' witnessed the first year students (National Diploma 1) pip their superiors, Higher National Diploma 1, 2-1 in the men's football final of the 2022 Provost Cup on Wednesday, June 22 to clinch the title.

The match which was played in the institution's field in Ogba, Lagos, saw the HND 1 team break the deadlock in the first half. Though, the ND 1 team levelled scores few minutes later and even went further to take the lead via a team effort that yielded in a well taken goal.

They were able to maintain their lead and build on the momentum as they held their own to win via a 2-1 scoreline.

The women were equally in action as the ND team face off against HND side. The HND team were on top of their game from the blast of the whistle, mounting pressure on their opponent. Their good start to the game eventually paid off after taking advantage of their rivals error, whose defender scored an own goal to give them a 1-0 lead.

Having scored the first goal, they looked unplayable, posing threats from time to time, thus they register the second goal to have a comfortable lead. At the end of the tie and deservedly so, the HND women's team defeated their ND counterparts 2-0 to win the 2022 women's Provost Cup.

Meanwhile, students also participated in track and field events. The events got underway with inter-class relay between the female students of ND 1, ND 2, HND 1 and HND 2 respectively. The male were also involved in the inter-class relay. But this time, HND 1 were not present due to lack of representatives. Unlike the female category, HND 2 came first, ND 1 were second while ND 2 finished in the third place.

Amidst relay, the athletes (both male and female of ND 1, ND 2, HND 1 and HND 2) also got engaged in 100 metre race. The female category saw ND 1 claim the first spot, HND 2 as second, ND 2 occupying the third position and HND 1 wrapping up the race.

However, HND 1 led in the male category by winning the race, ND 1 made themselves known in the second position, HND 2 and ND 2 ended the race in third and fourth respectively.
