NIJ holds general meeting to address pertinent issues
The Nigerian Institute of Journalism on Wednesday held a first in a long time general meeting between the management staff and the students to address burning issues in the school academics.
At the meeting in the school auditorium between 12 noon and
1:30 pm the management reeled out pertinent information about academics, administration,
student conducts and answered questions of the students present at the meeting.
The Deputy Provost,
Dr Dele Omojuyigbe, after the short address by the Provost stated key
information that the students need to remember as long as they are student of
the institute to lay foundation for the discussion of the day.
He reminded them of the importance of early school fees payment,
academic regulations of compulsory atleast 70% attendance and no malpractice,
the need for appropriate dressing in the school campus and following due cause
of process for raising issues and problems in the institute.
Dr Dele also made
it known to students that attacking any member of the staff is an offence that
is punishable by rustication. Undermining the school and management is strongly
advised against. “You can’t be in a
school, running down the school and expect to get a certificate from the same
school” he said.

When the students were asked to put forth their questions, the
President of the Student Representative
Council, Adedapo Adesanya raised the already rampant issue in the school
about the change of some students from broadcast option to print and vice
versa. He asked for an extension for the payment of the 11,000 by the student from the management. He also asked for the
management to help ensure the anonymity and protection of students who report
some lecturers’ misgiving from their wrath.
Answering the SRC President’s question, the Provost of NIJ, Mr Gbenga Adefaye explained that the issue was caused by the digitisation of the school system which is necessary in the 21st century and aimed at protecting the students’ academic records from human errors. He explained that the money was meant to purchase the software solution meant for ethical hacking into the portal system that would enable the correction of the errors in the registration information of the students. He quoted the cost of the software to be USD 740 which is NGN 306,582 at the rate of 414.300 and this is what will be bought by the students with the money they were asked to pay.

The provost and management team also answered questions of other students that pertain to lecturers’ conduct and accommodation of the Muslim faithfuls in the school class and exam timetable. It was duly stressed that the management of the school is there for the students primarily and that “students are the critical stakeholders of NIJ”. Students are also encouraged to use the suggestion box provided to report any of their observations.
Students of the HND2 class who were affected by the course
option change issue however apologized to the management at the meeting for not
attending the earlier meeting slated for addressing their issue and agreed to
pay the sum or state 11,000 naira.
Students who were present at the meeting also clamor for the
reoccurrence of meetings like this as one of the students of HND 2 requested
the SRC President to ask for the next day this kind of meeting will be held.
