OGBA RESIDENTS COMPLAIN OVER HYGIENE OF ROADSIDE FOOD by Aderinsola Oluwatosin
Residents of Yaya Abatan street, Ogba in Lagos have complained about the effects of lack of hygiene of roadside food in the area.
In an interview with NIJ VOICE correspondent, Nike, a resident gave her experience about her encounter.
"It is not hygienic for me to buy food on the street. I have noticed food vendors use dirty water to prepare food, which can cause typhoid and the annoying part is that is common among all the vendors", she said.
Joseph, a rice and beans seller , he explained a lot of traders pour saliva in the food that they are selling and during preparation process, the sweat will pour into the food and affect people that are buying those who patronize them.
Another resident, Jasmine said she is not really a fan of roadside food, preferring home made food which she makes herself after experiencing purging from consuming roadside food.
''I have also noticed that some of these food stands are located beside public toilets. I will advise people to save enough money and stock up your food stuff and cook yourself or even if you want fast food, it must be eateries with a trusted clean environment.''
''Talking about roadside Shawarma, I see flies perching on them and we still buy them. There was an experience purchasing one and after eating it, I was vomiting and stooling. It made me loose complete interest in Shawarma,'' she continued.
She advised vendors should be more health concerned when cooking or covering their food to curb the excesses of unhygienic food as it would not be fair to them if they are banned from selling which is their source of livelihood.
Daniel Okonkwo revealed he never ate roadside food until he started staying with his aunt because she hardly allows anyone to cook.
"I am from an Igbo background and I grew up in a family that is extremely particular about eating hygienic food so we make sure we cook everything we eat properly, including treating the water we drink.''
''You need to see how my stomach runs anytime I eat the food and the most annoying aspect is that this woman that we have been purchasing food from is selling her food beside a long gutter.''
He then advised residents to be very careful of the roadside food they eat and make sure that where the food is sold is a clean environment.
