IWD 2022: Women should champion the breaking of barriers

Students and young female journalists have been asked to lead the breaking of barriers campaign.

Leading female experts in the media industry said this to the participants present at the Open House Discussion in commemoration of the 2022 International Women's Day organised by the Media Career Development Network yesterday.

Themed #BreakingTheBias for students and young female journalists and Career Development Prospects, the program held at the MCDN Centre in Ogba had people like  Editor at Social Deva

 News Mrs Funmi Folabi, Senior correspondent of  Vanguard Allure, Mrs Temitope Ojo, Deputy director Voice Of Nigeria (VON) Mrs Ugonma Cokey and the former chairman National Association of Women Journalist (NAWOJ) Lagos chapter, Alhaja Sekinat Lawal.

Students from the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, University of Lagos and young female journalists advised to be hard-working, diligent, read well and wide and  not limit themselves.

They were also charged to be versatile and not consentrate only on a genre of the craft but explore other areas and go the extramile. Also stresses is the need to be humble and able to learn from anybody, celebrate hardwork and connect with as many people as they can.

Mrs Ugonma, when sharing her experience and tips told the participants especially, that "as a young journalist, make your decision to be a journalist first, and the determination and passion will carry you throughout the journey"

In her interesting talk, Mrs Cokey said "there are bias in the media industry, and even though there are men who help women grow, if women truly want equality, they should be the first to carry out the breakage
