Pen Radio at One: How we overcame challenges- Osuntoki
By Abosede Hannah
Nigerian Institute of Journalism’s Pen Radio celebrates its first anniversary, despite facing all odds.
Speaking during the anniversary held at the school campus earlier in the week, Programme Director and Lecturer, Olufemi Osuntoki recount how the establishment faced lots of criticism before launching out.
Still an online radio, Osuntoki said, “Success starts from scratch. The print department was the first arrangement we made when we come together.”
Emphasising the reason for establishing the radio station, Osuntoki stated that practical teachings are needed in a school of communication like NIJ, not just teaching theories alone.
According to Osuntoki, alongside his colleague, Christy Okoh said they had limited time to prepare for the launch. “We looked at each other and said we need to do this thing - solve this problem. How much do you have? We just need to put what we have together and we did by the grace of God,”
“And after two weeks, it came. We had a boldness that this will come to pass,” he said.
Speaking further: “When we were about to start, there were a lot of obstacles. You know people, but am not blaming anybody.
“We started training students upon the student. Let them come there, any little mistake they made we correct then.”
Osuntoki submitted that most Nigerian mentality is to see whether a project is going to work and when they see that it has started working, they give you some time again you give it some time to see whether you are going to end it well.
Commending the efforts of the lecturer, the school registrar, Madam Patricia Kalesanwo added that Osuntoki put the techniques together as a broadcast lecturer, and “there we are today, Pen Radio is alive. We have gathered together to appreciate God for what he has done for us.
“And I pray that NIJ pen radio will continue to fly higher. Very soon we will soon launch our terrestrial radio station, this year by the power of God.”,
